Tardies and Absences            School begins at 8:00
Every day is an important day at school; something new is always being taught. Even the first ten or fifteen minutes of each day can affect your child's success. Students who arrive even a few minutes late tend to be less organized and prepared than the students who arrive on time.


In addition to the problem-solving focused curriculum, we will also be taking facts tests this year. Third graders should already be very familiar with their addition and subtraction facts. We will start with these and work to build speed and automatic recall. We will then begin working on multiplication facts and then division facts. Students will take a test of 30 facts in 2 minutes each week and must pass with a 90% two times before moving on to the next level. The web site will be updated with current concepts and study hints regularly.

This year we will be going through the sciences by broad disciplines. We will begin with Physical Science, and then move to Earth Science, and then finish the year with Life Science. Please check my web page for current information.

Your child will usually have homework four days a week. A homework binder will go home every night. The binder will contain several divider sections that you will need to check. Each night, please check the planner for any assignments and notes for that evening. After checking the planner, please sign by that day's date. One divider section may contain completed work that is not being saved for the Tuesday Folders. This daily work is for you to go over and keep.

Occasionally, your child may need help with a homework assignment. We support your willingness to work with you child, but would appreciate a note if you feel your child had a great deal of difficulty with the assignment. This will let us know if we need to reteach this concept or skill to your child. A good rule of thumb (one that we use in school) is to resist the urge to take the pencil out of the child's hand. We encourage help with editing, etc., but the student should write corrections.

Please help your student develop responsibility and come prepared with assignments completed on time. They must return the homework binder each morning! This will allow the teachers to monitor closely each days's progress.

Rewards: Appropriate behavior will be recognized with classroom recognition, positive notes, and/or phone calls home. We also have a Bush Bucks system that I'm sure your child would like to tell you about.

Consequences: Students who receive a conduct mark for behavior will bring home a red behavior slip. Your child will have written a sentence on the slip explaining each problem. Please sign and return it the next day, so that the teachers know that you are aware of the situation. Children are sent to the office only after many teacher interventions, or immediately, in the case of a serious infraction.

Every Friday, we will send home a red conduct folder. In it you will find a monthly calendar. On the calendar, we will record your child's conduct grade for the week. The chart details specific problems, if any. Please sign the calendar where indicated each week, and return the folder on Monday. We believe this system will give you a clear picture of your child's week. It will also help you understand your child's conduct grade on the report card.

An S on the report card indicates Satisfactory behavior, appropriate for a third grader. e's are given for excellent behavior, NI means Needs Improvement, and U means the conduct is unsatisfactory.

Tuesday Folders
Graded papers will be sent home each week in a “Tuesday Folder.” Papers with a failing grade must be signed and returned. On a week with a Monday holiday, the Tuesday Folder might not be sent until Wednesday.

This folder will usually be packed with information from the school office such as the Bush Banner, important notices, and items from the PTO. It is very important that your child return the Tuesday Folder the next day.

Parent communication
Communication is very important for academic success. Progress reports will be sent to all students after the middle of each grading period. Conferences are offered twice a year (one mid-fall and one mid-spring). In addition, the teacher or parent may schedule a conference on an as-needed basis. This can be held by telephone or in person. If you would like to schedule a conference, please send a note or email.

Please help your child be responsible and prepared for school each day. Set aside a special place at home to collect school supplies in the evening so your child will be ready for the next day. Please place water bottles in an outside pocket or put them inside a heavy plastic bag. Many books have been ruined by contact with water bottles.

Since our lunch is very early this year, please send a quick, healthy, easy to eat snack for your child to eat each day after recess. They will also need a water bottle that can be refilled during the course of the day. Sports top bottles help to prevent spills.

You are welcome to eat lunch with you child . Please wait for us in the main hallway or the cafeteria. All students at Bush have Silent Time during the first and last five minutes of lunch to encourage them to finish all their food and clean up. Parents say goodbye to children at the beginning of the last Silent Time.

We love to celebrate birthdays! If you choose to bring in a small, peanut free store bought treat to share with the whole class, please plan on delivering them to the classroom at the end of the day.

Dropping off items
If your child has left something at home, you may drop it off at the Drop-Off Table outside the front office. If it is a lunch, your child will check the table before lunch. We try to limit distractions during our precious instructional time.

Rainy Days / Transportation changes
You will be asked to send a note at the beginning of the year stating your alternate plan to be followed on rainy days. If you have transportation changes, please follow Bush school policy.
